ONE OF MY BEST EXPERIENCES
Firstly, I would like to start by telling you a little bit about myself. I have been studying English since I started school, but well, the first time I decided to go to an academy, I was only 13. It was July when I first entered the academy, I was about to start a summer intensive course there. That was my first contact with my future classes, teachers and also classmates. I got really surprised because although the idea of studying English was not an obligation, spending the whole month of July studying was not the best plan I could have had. Surprisingly, this made me a lot more mature and also, I met a lot of new friends( the ones I keep in touch with now). This was my beginning.
Due to the fact that I was really happy with my new experience, I decided to start a course of English every Tuesday and Thursday after school. As you can imagine, this meant meeting new teachers and also new mates. Once again, I met incredible people and I also started feeling very proud of myself. Since then, I have done a lot more extra English lessons in St George: 4 long years and 4 summer intensives.
When I entered, as I have already told you, I was only 13 and my level of English was awful. Little by little and step by step, I started improving. However, it has not been an easy task. What has been very necessary is the patience of all my teachers!!!! (My goodness, I was very tiresome!!) As you can see, learning a new language has been a long project. As a result, I have experienced a lot of different feelings during this adventure: frustration when things didn’t go as well as I expected, self-satisfaction when I reached my goals such as passing official exams and moving forward to my objective, attachment to my new friends I was meeting each year, affection towards some teachers that taught me more than English grammar…
There can be no doubt that this adventure has been completely marvellous for me. I´m only 17 now, so this academy was my first new experience of English apart from school. The journey has not been very easy because of the effort that learning a new language requires, but I have to admit that St. George and its teachers have been the best companion I could have had. Now, I feel very strongly that any goal you want to achieve can be reached with effort, and for me, this has been the best lesson that my teachers have taught me. I´m so proud of my decisions until now and this is a clear example.
I am extremely grateful to all the people that make up St. George, from the dear director Denis to the ones that encourage me each day when I enter class.
Now, I have finished my English studies and I have to say goodbye to my second home. The idea of writing this letter astonished me, because as I have told you, English is more than a language for me. It has meant a complete way of learning for my entire life.
I really hope that more students like me start this trip and enjoy it as much as I have done.
All my love,
Ane Cilleruelo Bilbao
